A new $10,000 grant turns a simple truth into action — for a hungry veteran, the last mile home is everything.
For a food insecure veteran, the distance between an empty refrigerator and a hot meal is often measured not in dollars, but in miles. The pantry may have the food. Our kitchen may have the meal. But without a ride — without someone to carry it that last mile to the door — help stays just out of reach.
That gap is exactly what a new partnership between Cook For Vets and DATA Mobility Partners is closing. This month, the Ruth and Hal Launders Charitable Trust awarded Reston-based DATA Mobility Partners a $10,000 grant to power transportation solutions that fight food insecurity across Northern Virginia — with Cook For Vets among its first and most important partners. For the veterans we serve, it’s more than a grant. It’s a lifeline delivered to the doorstep.
Why transportation is a food security issue
The need is staggering. According to the Capital Area Food Bank’s 2025 Hunger Report, nearly one in three households — 30.75% — across the greater D.C. region, including Prince William County, experiences food insecurity.
DATA Mobility Partners has spent more than a decade learning a quiet truth: transportation is a healthcare issue. For years, their volunteer drivers have carried elderly veterans and seniors to medical appointments they otherwise could not reach. When two separate hunger relief organizations came to DATA facing the same roadblock — good food that couldn’t reach the people who needed it — the lesson expanded. Transportation isn’t only a healthcare issue. It’s a food security issue, too.
“Getting available food to recipients without transportation resources” is the exact problem this partnership was built to solve.
What the partnership delivers
The Launders Trust grant turns that insight into action on the ground in Northern Virginia. Working hand in hand with Cook For Vets, DATA is already:
- Recruiting volunteer food delivery drivers for Cook For Vets, including new routes across Prince William County.
- Coordinating corporate volunteer days with Northwest Federal Credit Union to move meals from D.C. Central Kitchen’s Washington warehouse to the Cook For Vets distribution facility.
- Delivering groceries from Soldier’s Angels’ Washington, D.C. veteran food distribution event to veterans in Prince William County and across Northern Virginia who have no transportation of their own.
Every one of those trips ends the same way: a neighbor handing a hot meal or a bag of groceries to a veteran who served our country — and who, today, simply needs a hand.
What it means for Cook For Vets
At Cook For Vets, our mission is simple and personal: Souls Feeding Souls. Since 2023, our all volunteer team has cooked and hand delivered more than 9,100 meals to 85 food insecure veteran households across Northern Virginia. Right now, demand for veteran meal referrals is higher than it has ever been — we’re on track to deliver approximately 7,000 meals this year alone. This demand far outpaces our capacity of volunteer drivers to get every meal to a veteran’s door.
That’s where DATA changes the equation. More trained, organized, reliable drivers means more routes. More routes means more veterans moved off the waiting list and onto a schedule of warm, nutritious meals delivered right to their door. The Launders Trust grant, and DATA’s decade of transportation expertise, help us do the one thing our mission depends on most — get the food the last mile home.
