Practice does make perfect! It does not cease to amaze me how well-orchestrated our meal delivery system is becoming. Our volunteer base is now thirty-five and counting. From cooking to packing breakfasts, lunches, and dinners plus bags of groceries from the food pantry, we managed, in just three short months, to have implemented an efficient “game plan” that serves as the foundation for Cook For Vets to carry out its mission.
We made nice strides this month by delivering meals to a total of twelve people; two Veterans, a single mom with one child, and two families of four including two small children, and two cats. For their St. Patrick’s Day meal, we prepared chicken sausages, mashed potatoes, cabbage with onions, along with Irish Soda bread for Saturday and Sunday dinners. Sunday breakfast was yogurt, oatmeal, and a banana while Sunday lunch was tuna salad, a tortilla, a fruit cup, and granola bar.
With every delivery, we do our best to provide wholesome meals and take into account those who have dietary restrictions, as well. To date, we have delivered a total of forty-eight meals within the Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, London, and Alexandria counties of Northern Virginia. It is a privilege and honor to do this work and seeing the smiles on the faces of those receiving their delivery is so very heartwarming. As the year unfolds, our network of warriors battling Veteran hunger will continue to make strides by becoming a nutritional assistance program for those too proud to ask for help. As our name implies, we are Cook For Vets, proudly serving the Veteran community and battling food scarcity for our nation’s heroes.
